Today is draft day, and there appears to be chatter… what else is new?
This time, the Leafs appear to be talking with the Nashville Predators about right-shot defenseman PK Subban, according to Elliotte Friedman.
Regardless of what you think about his “personality”, Subban has proven himself to be one of the best defensemen in the league over the course of his 10-year career, amassing 408 points in 645 games with the Predators and the Montreal Canadiens, and even has a Norris trophy from the 2012-13 season.
The 30-year-old has three years left on his $9 million contract, which the Predators are trying to move for free agency purposes (Matt Duchene, anyone?) or to re-sign their other All-Star defenseman and captain Roman Josi.
However, the high cap hit also leaves the question as to what the Leafs will be giving up for him, considering their own cap situation and contract negotiations with Mitch Marner.
This either means that Mitch Marner might be the return, or they’ll have to clear up enough cap space to make room for both players (ie. Kadri, Zaitsev), so this could potentially mean that we wait until closer to free agency before something happens, especially since the Leafs don’t have a first at today’s draft to give away.
