Two days ago, Swedish news outlet Aftonbladet reported that Maple Leafs prospect and AHL scoring sensation William Nylander was “likely” to join Team Sweden at this year’s IIHF U20 World Junior Championships. This morning, Nylander’s participation was confirmed by Sportexpressen. Here’s the quote from Swedish Hockey Federation VP Peter Forsberg…
“Yes, I have met the NHL lead again here in New York in the evening and got the news that the Toronto Maple Leafs will release Nylander and LA Kings to do the same with Kempe.”
Last year, Nylander scored three goals and 11 points in seven games played for Sweden’s WJC squad, one point of Team Canada’s Sam Reinhart, Nic Petan and Connor McDavid for the tournament lead. This season, Nylander currently leads the AHL in scoring – as a 19-year old – with 10 goals and 24 points in 19 games. His inclusion in this year’s WJC tournament gives Sweden a massive boost and makes them an instant gold medal contender.
