Berube laments Maple Leafs’ mistakes in third period vs. Golden Knights: ‘We didn’t finish ’em off’

The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped a second straight game on Thursday, falling 6-5 to the Vegas Golden Knights in overtime.
Scoring two quick goals in the first period, the Leafs held onto the lead for nearly the whole game, responding each time the Golden Knights got back within one. That is, until Vegas finally found the tying goal with seven seconds remaining in the game to force overtime, where Jack Eichel sealed the Golden Knights victory.
Considering they led for nearly 58 minutes of play, coming away with just one point was a tough pill to swallow. Speaking after the game, Craig Berube talked about the costly final frame where Vegas tallied three goals (and another that got called back).
“Just a couple mistakes in the third period,” Berube said. “We give up a 2-on-1, we take a penalty, no need for that penalty, and they scored again with their goalie out. Yeah, the tying goal, it’s tough. We have a broken stick and you can’t cover everybody. That was a tough play, seven seconds. You know, we didn’t finish ’em off. I think we can probably do a better job in the third period of just managing a little better than we did.”
Through three games on this southwest road trip, Toronto sits at a 1-1-1 record with one more game to go, despite starting with a statement win over the league-leading Colorado Avalanche. Given how dominant Toronto was through most of the game against Vegas, Berube was disappointed in the final result.
“It’s frustrating to lose this game tonight,” Berube said. “We got off to a great start and I thought we played really well tonight for the most part of the game. We just gotta be smarter in certain situations, that’s what it boils down to tonight. I think we played a solid game tonight, but we made some mistakes that we don’t need to make in the third period.”
Despite putting out some better hockey lately, the Leafs still hold one of the league’s worst away records this season, currently at 7-11-3. They’ll look to improve that on Saturday against the Winnipeg Jets, before heading back to Toronto for a five-game homestand.
