The Toronto Maple Leafs opened up the first day of training camp with media availabilities for general manager Brad Treliving, head coach Craig Berube, and a select few players. With Treliving kicking things off on the podium, he revealed that forward Max Domi is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
Domi, 30, is in the second year of a four-year contract extension he signed following the 2023-24 season. He missed some time with a lower-body injury last season as well, but still suited up for the majority of the season with 74 games played in 2024-25. It was part of what was, overall, a down year for him, with only eight goals and 33 points in 74 games. His production took somewhat of a step back from his first season in Toronto, when he had 47 points, but he came alive in the playoffs and scored three goals en route to seven points in 13 games. These goals included an overtime-winner in Game 2 vs. the Ottawa Senators and a goal to get the Maple Leafs back in the game against the Florida Panthers when they hosted Game 7. That goal obviously didn’t amount to a win, but it did give the team a bit of life.
Domi will not be taking part in practice on Thursday as a full participant, but it’s unlikely that this will carry into the regular season unless he further aggravates it in training camp. Treliving didn’t specify the nature of the injury, but day-to-day at this time of year usually means exactly what it says, so at this point, it’s probably safe to assume that things will be business as usual.
The Maple Leafs will hit the ice for the first time on Thursday and kick off preseason action with the return of the Battle of Ontario for the first time since the playoffs when they travel to Ottawa on Sunday.
