At last, Maple Leafs training camp is just about here.
The festivities will officially kick off on Wednesday with player physicals before on-ice sessions get underway on Thursday.
The boys are back in town, baby.
Speaking of which, we kicked off the latest edition of Leafs Morning Take by discussing this cryptic campaign that the Leafs have been running. In case you’ve missed it or straight up don’t care, in recent posts, the ‘O’ has been missing from branding, which has sparked a feverish debate within Leafs Nation. At some point over the next few weeks, we’ll get a resolution to all this. For now, let the mass hysteria continue.
Presented by Greta Bar YYZ, we kicked off the show by dissecting some of the major storylines entering camp with NHL Head Coach/Analyst Bruce Boudreau. As per usual, Gabby was very pointed and candid with his assessment of the squad. For the record, he’s a big believer in Craig Berube. He thinks he could make a big difference.
After that, we touched on Jonas Siegel’s report from last week that suggested that the Leafs could experiment with William Nylander up the middle again. On paper, it makes sense. Having said that, both of us are on the fence about trying it out again. We’ll see what Berube and company elect to do.
Meantime, we also recapped the prospect showdown from over the weekend in Montreal. Toronto won both contests at the Bell Centre, 4-3 in a shootout and 5-4. Unsurprisingly, Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan stood out. So did Topi Niemela, who racked up five helpers. Ben Danford didn’t play due to an upper body injury he sustained in a scrimmage prior to the two games against the mini Canadiens.
We’ll be back on Thursday at 11 AM ET with a brand new episode of Leafs Morning Take. Talk then!
