Let this sink in: Daniel Alfredsson is now a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
We gave our quick thoughts on that before welcoming in Craig Berube to kick off the latest edition of Leafs Morning Take. Less than two months after being fired by the Maple Leafs, Berube stopped by for an in-depth conversation. Berube reflected on what went wrong during his tenure in Toronto, his exit meeting with John Chayka and Mats Sundin, and why he would handle certain situations differently if given another chance. He also shared his thoughts on the Leafs’ offseason, praised the club’s additions, discussed coaching in the Toronto market, and opened up about interviewing for the head coaching job with the Edmonton Oilers.
After that, we dissected what Berube had to say. As per usual, he was very direct and blunt with his commentary. Of note, he really opened up about his relationship with the players, especially Nylander. Berube loved his time in Toronto, even though it was short.
Back to Alfredsson. That one came completely out of nowhere. The Senators legend is now the associate coach on Jim Hiller’s staff. Essentially, that title just means he’ll make more than the other two assistants the Leafs hired: John Gruden and Brad Werenka.
It’s been a recurring theme over the past few months, but the organization has opted for wholesale changes behind the bench. For what it’s worth, both Gruden and Werenka have strong ties to Hiller. Gruden coached alongside him with the Islanders, while Werenka has been friends with Hiller since they won the NCAA championship together in 1991. The two also co-founded the hockey video and analytics company TruPerformance.
Obviously, the Alfredsson hire is the one that stands out. Anytime you can pry someone away from a division rival, it’s a good day. The former Senators captain was clearly looking for a bigger challenge, and now he’ll get it in Toronto. It will be fascinating to see how he fits in with this staff. This hire has Mats Sundin’s fingerprints all over it. And for what it’s worth, Rosie absolutely loved the move.
Leafs Morning Take will return on Friday at 11 a.m. ET. David Pagnotta will be in for Jay Rosehill as co-host.
