Toronto Maple Leafs forward Calle Jarnkrok remains day-to-day with a lower-body injury that has kept him out of the majority of the preseason, the team confirmed Monday. The team also announced that he would be starting the season on the injured reserve, reflected in his absence from the team’s opening night roster.
Jarnkrok returned to practice on October 2 after a week-long absence but he was added back to the injury report on October 4, ahead of Toronto’s final preseason game against the Detroit Red Wings.
Prior to the injury, Jarnkrok began training camp alongside Max Domi and William Nylander. Domi and Nylander took line rushes alongside John Tavares and will almost certainly operate as the Maple Leafs’ second line during Wednesday’s season opener against the Montreal Canadiens.
“He’s still day-to-day,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed via TSN’s Mark Masters on Monday. When asked about a potential timetable for Jarnkrok’s return, Berube said he didn’t know right now.
Jarnkrok does all the small things well for the Maple Leafs and was considered a defensively responsible presence on the line featuring Domi and Nylander to begin camp. The 33-year-old recorded 10 goals and 21 points in 52 games during the regular season, but was held without a point during Toronto’s seven-game playoff series versus the Boston Bruins.
In corresponding news, Jake McCabe returned to practice Monday. McCabe was also listed as day-to-day and was held out of Saturday’s preseason game. McCabe was paired alongside Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who he played with nearly exclusively during the preseason, and will operate as Toronto’s second pair, behind Morgan Rielly and Chris Tanev.
Toronto will release its full regular season lineup Monday. Max Pacioretty and Steven Lorentz both signed one-year contracts on Monday, joining the team after beginning camp on professional tryout agreements. Pacioretty’s deal is worth $1.5 million, with an $873,770 cap hit, with bonus structures reportedly tied to 10-game and 35-game marks. Lorentz’s one-year pact is worth $775,000. Cade Webber also signed a two-year extension reportedly worth $825,000 annually.
