Max Pacioretty and the Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to a one-year contract, the team confirmed Monday.
Nick Alberga of The Leafs Nation was the first to report.
Pacioretty’s new deal also includes two performance bonuses, each worth $313,115, if he reaches the 10-game mark, and 35-game mark, respectively, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports.
Pacioretty joined the Maple Leafs on a professional tryout option (PTO) and exceeded expectations, exemplified by a two-goal performance against the Montreal Canadiens in the preseason opener. A veteran of 902 NHL games, Pacioretty enters his 17th NHL season in search of an elusive Stanley Cup and this may be the best team he’s ever played on.
“This is the hardest group I’ve ever been a part of. I saw it from day one. Those top guys, it’s not a fluke why they’re the top guys. They put in the work. They take care of themselves. I saw it within two minutes of being here, but you see it every day, every morning, and it’s really nice to be around.”
The veteran forward spoke about the strengths of the Maple Leafs being able to deploy multiple forwards at either centre or wing, and spoke to the unselfish nature of the group. Pacioretty could be deployed in a top-six role, or shift down to a bottom-six role with some potential scoring punch.
“I think especially depth like that, down the road, down the stretch, whether it was injuries or not,” Pacioretty said Saturday morning. “Whether guys are feeling good about their game or not, or having to get guys going. If I were a coach, I would definitely like to have that in my back pocket. Kind of some Swiss Army knife guys who can play up and down throughout the lineup. Good guys who are willing to do it for the team is what (we) have here. It might be an opportunity up the lineup to play in a certain spot but maybe it helps the team to play a little bit down the lineup in another spot. And you need those selfless players that we feel we have here to help the team in that sense.”
Pacioretty recorded four goals and 23 points in 47 games with the Washington Capitals in 2023-24 and could be in line for a real comeback season, after overcoming multiple Achilles injuries.

Pacioretty said “it means a lot” to sign with the Leafs. “At this stage of my career, the most important thing is winning, and I feel that this group has a chance to win. There’s a lot of strong players, and you don’t just want to be along for the ride, you want to contribute.”

Toronto also signed Steven Lorentz to a one-year contract. Lorentz made the team after initially agreeing to a professional tryout agreement, coming from the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. Terms of his contract were not confirmed by the team, but Lorentz’s one-year deal is reportedly worth $775,000, per Seravalli.
