Since entering the league in 2017, the Vegas Golden Knights have developed a cutthroat, ruthless, and bold reputation.
Over the years, that hasn’t changed one bit.
Only Sunday afternoon, they stunned the hockey world by firing Bruce Cassidy and hiring John Tortorella. Vegas has eight games left. They’re currently in a playoff spot, and obviously, they’re looking to find lightning a bottle by making this type of move.
Naturally, that’s where the conversation started on the Monday edition of Leafs Morning Take as we tried to correlate what this move could mean for the Maple Leafs. Assuming Craig Berube’s fired, Cassidy would indisputably be a name of high interest for Toronto. It’s just wild to think that Mitch Marner’s new coach (Cassidy) was fired before his old coach (Berube). What were the odds of that happening?
Meantime, the Leafs delivered another stinker over the weekend in St. Louis. For the record, Berube won a Stanley Cup in St. Louis, and that’s the way they come out? Yeah, he’s done. At any rate, the entire fan base is waiting for Monday night’s tilt in Anaheim with bated breath to see how the Leafs address Radko Gudas —assuming he plays. At this point, there’s no telling how they’re going to come out. Speaking of which, we did dissect William Nylander’s comments from Friday where he may have indirectly taken a shot at Berube. This team’s so cooked. Everyone’s just waiting for the season to end.
After that, HHOFer Chris Pronger stopped by for a brutally honest look at the state of the Maple Leafs. He didn’t hold back on Toronto’s lack of response to the Radko Gudas hit that ended Auston Matthews’ season, questioning the team’s pushback and setting low expectations for the rematch. Pronger also weighed in on Matthews’ recovery, the Leafs’ core issues, and what needs to change moving forward, while offering candid thoughts on the futures of Craig Berube and Brad Treliving. He also touched on the coaching landscape, including Bruce Cassidy and John Tortorella, before raising eyebrows with his openness to potentially speaking with Toronto this offseason.
David Pagnotta will be in as co-host on Tuesday’s edition of Leafs Morning Take. Join us for a full recap of Leafs/Ducks. Plus, we’ll look ahead to the rest of the California swing for the Maple Leafs.
