The Toronto Maple Leafs wrapped up a four-game road trip on Saturday with a 4-3 overtime win against the Winnipeg Jets.
Despite twice facing a two-goal deficit in the game, the Maple Leafs rallied and fought their way back, putting it away in extra time. After the game, head coach Craig Berube spoke about what he liked from his team as they closed out their road trip.
“We stuck with it, good character win,” Berube said. “Obviously a great way to finish off the road trip. It was a tough trip, but I liked our road trip overall.”
Matthews continued his redemption arc on Saturday, scoring the first goal of the game for the Leafs to tally his third in four games. The captain later fed Max Domi for the overtime winner, earning his 17th point in 11 games.
Berube gave Matthews his share of praise after the match, but pointed to the overall effort from the group as the difference maker in this one.
“(Matthews) was good all game,” Berube said. “He was skating and attacking all game, he had his legs. That line was really good for us tonight. But, you know, it was a good team effort. I thought everybody contributed and did a good job tonight.”
Even after Toronto took the win, Berube could be seen expressing his frustration with the referees after the game, in particular for a late power play given to the Jets.
yes Craig!
He didn’t shy away from sharing his discontent with the media, but said he was proud of how the penalty kill pulled through despite it.
“That kill at the end, that’s huge,” Berube said. “I wasn’t a fan of two of the calls tonight. But I thought our PK, like all year, was a really strong part of our game. They did a great job and provided some opportunities the other way too.”
The Maple Leafs finish their road trip with a 2-1-1 record, collecting five of a possible eight points through that stretch. After the game, Berube was asked if he’s satisfied with that tally.
“Yeah, for sure,” he said. “Again, that’s a tough trip we were on. We were seven seconds away from getting six (points), so extremely good trip for the group.”
In case you missed it, Berube is referring to the Maple Leafs loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, where their Nevada opponents tied it with seven seconds left in the game to force overtime. That one aside, they still came away with a big win over the league-leading Colorado Avalanche and a comeback victory against the Jets.
The Maple Leafs begin a five-game homestand on Monday, which includes the highly anticipated return of Mitch Marner to Toronto on Friday.
