Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Dakota Mermis has been called up, while Fraser Minten has been assigned to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, the organization announced Monday.
Mermis will likely fill a void left by Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s lower-body injury that he suffered during Saturday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers. Ekman-Larsson did not return to the contest and Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube listed him as day-to-day. Mermis has recorded three assists with the Marlies in 12 games, and played one NHL game this season with the Utah Hockey Club. He was claimed off waivers by the Maple Leafs in January, in what’s been a turbulent season, where he was initially waived by the Maple Leafs in December, and claimed by Utah.
A further update on Ekman-Larsson’s status is expected to come down on Tuesday afternoon. It also means that Philippe Myers could be reinserted into the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Calgary Flames.
Minten operated as Toronto’s third-line centre with injuries to Matthew Knies and John Tavares, and will be afforded a further chance to develop with the Marlies. The 20-year-old make a strong impact in his return to the Maple Leafs’ lineup against the Tampa Bay Lightning on January 20, but will ultimately need to produce more offence at the NHL level, with two goals and four points in 15 games. It’s more than possible that Minten could return to the Maple Leafs if injuries continue to mount, as he plays a pro-ready style of game, with some utility on the penalty kill. Max Domi will likely factor back in as Toronto’s third line centre alongside Bobby McMann and Nick Robertson.
Knies and Tavares returned to the lineup for Saturday’s 4-3 victory over the Oilers. Knies scored a goal and an assist, while Tavares factored in as Toronto’s second-line centre on a line featuring Max Pacioretty and William Nylander.
