It’s a good time to be a Toronto sports fan.
The Blue Jays captured their seventh American League crown in franchise history on Sunday afternoon and the Maple Leafs are primed for another monster season. The season opener is now just nine short days away!
At any rate, we kicked off the latest edition of Leafs Morning Take by giving our quick thoughts on the Jays’ magical season. John Schneider’s squad will kick off their post season slate next Saturday against either the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox.
After that, we got into the Anthony Stolarz extension. WHAT. A. DEAL. In short order, Brad Treliving has done a great job instilling that the Leafs will not be taken to the woodshed anymore when it comes to contracts. This was another piece of shrewd business. The cap hit will give the team so much flexibility moving forward. Incredibly, Toronto will get the dynamic Stolarz/Woll combo for a combined $7.42 million for two years after this one. With the cap going up exponentially, this will prove to be extremely valuable. Easy win for Brad Treliving and the Leafs. On top of that, Stolarz got some long-term flexibility, too.
Speaking of which, Stolarz made 15 stops in his preseason debut Saturday night against Montreal. The Leafs lost 4-2, but in the end, the result didn’t matter very much. John Tavares had one and one while William Nylander, fresh off the launch of his new YouTube channel, potted the other. The Leafs are headed to Muskoka to do some team bonding before they host Detroit on Thursday night. Just two games left on the exhibition late. Mercifully.
Then, Leafs legend Darryl Sittler dropped by the show. He weighed on the Blue Jays, the Stolarz extension, and his overall thoughts on the Leafs entering the new season. Additionally, Sittler offered up some sage advice for Easton Cowan, who seems destined for an Opening Night roster spot.
Leafs Morning Take will return for another episode on Wednesday at 11 AM ET.
