Another day on the calendar, another day without Leafs news. The offseason is a harsh mistress. But what if I told you that there was a light at the end of the tunnel? A way for you to enjoy hockey tomorrow in the fine city we all know and love? What if I told you I was going to be home for a whopping few hours this Thursday?
Five Hole For Food is hitting up Yonge and Dundas Square for their 5th annual Toronto appearance tomorrow. To keep things simple, Five Hole For Food raises money for local food banks (in Toronto’s case, Daily Bread) by organizing street hockey games across the country. All you have to do is show up with a can of food or a cash donation (bringing your own stick would be nice but not necessary), and you can jump in.
This year, I’ve had the pleasure of expanding beyond Toronto and travelling with the road team, and we’ve had a heck of a tour so far. We started in St. John’s, Newfoundland on July 2nd, and have since had games in Halifax, Charlottetown, Saint John, Montreal, and Ottawa. We even faced some Canadian Navy members on the flight deck of a warship. Now we’re here. For the rest of the guys, its another stop on the way to Vancouver, but for me, it’s a slight homecoming.
Plus, you know, street hockey. For a good cause, even! If nothing else, you can deke out fellow TLN writer and FHFF Toronto “City Champion” Steve Dangle Glynn. If we’re not good enough for you, TSN’s Bob McKenzie will be swinging by to play for a bit.
Barring that, at least do a friend of TheLeafsNation a favour:
I’ll be wearing a “Shut Up Jeffler” t-shirt. But not in tiger facepaint. Probably.
