A summer of seismic change continues on for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Toronto acquired defenceman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Raddysh promptly signed an eight-year extension, reportedly worth $8.5 million per season.
There may be some sticker shock, but as Daily Faceoff’s Matt Larkin explains, Raddysh’s AAV will be comparably affordable with the salary cap set to rise exponentially in the coming seasons.
From the on-ice perspective, this could be a home run for the Maple Leafs. Raddysh is coming off a career season where he recorded 22 goals and 70 points in 73 games, while averaging 22:42 of ice-time. He slots in as Toronto’s No. 1 defenceman for the foreseeable future, with Jake McCabe, Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson rounding out the core, along with RFA Emil Andrae, who was acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday
It’s a calculated bet by the Maple Leafs, essentially positing that Raddysh’s breakout campaign wasn’t an anomaly. Raddysh boasts a cannon of a shot from the point, and Tampa Bay controlled an outstanding 62 percent of the expected goals at 5-on-5 when he was on the ice last season. He’s posted a greater than 52 percent share of the expected goals at 5-on-5 in four of the past five seasons as well. Raddysh is mobile, can break the puck out, add primary offence, and it’s clear that John Chayka is building the Maple Leafs’ blue line in his own visage.
There will be more moves, as the Maple Leafs hold $18.75M in cap space via PuckPedia, after completing the Raddysh sign-and-trade. And while there is some consternation about the average annual value, Toronto may have secured the No. 1 defenceman that has eluded them during the entirety of the Auston Matthews era, for a relatively light acquisition cost. Chayka has added a foundational piece to the mix, and the next eight years will determine whether the Maple Leafs’ bet on Raddysh’s production pays off.

Raddysh had good underlyings with Tampa but rightfully wasn’t getting the ice time to prove himself behind Hedman. Even if he’s not a 20-goal 70-point player every year, the Leafs desperately needed a clapper from the point like his. Absolutely love this deal
