The Toronto Maple Leafs have added a solid depth-scoring piece to their roster by inking Jack Roslovic to a two-year contract worth $4 million annually, as reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Roslovic has been linked to the Maple Leafs a couple of times now. The Leafs were reportedly finalists to sign the 29-year-old last summer but he ultimately opted for a one-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. He scored 21 goals last season and added 36 points in 61 games.
The Maple Leafs have ample cap space to work with today, and although multiple reports say that they’re trying to work out a trade for star defenceman Zach Werenski, this deal indicates that general manager John Chayka has his feet dipped into multiple different areas right now. The Leafs needed more right-handed forwards, with William Nylander currently their only right-shot up front, and if they ink Colton Sissons to a contract later today, that will give them two more players in that department.
Sissons has a career high of 45 points, which he set in 2021-22 as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and he’s hit the 20-goal mark three times in his career. He can play both right-wing and centre, and while he’ll likely reside on the third line next season, he can jump into the top-six in a pinch and is also extremely familiar with Auston Matthews from their days with the U.S. National Team Development Program.
The Maple Leafs ultimately still have work to do, but following the trade of Nick Robertson to the Pittsburgh Penguins, they’ve filled that spot with a consistent 30-40 point and 20-goal capable forward who has versatility to play up and down the lineup. He won’t ever be out there in defensive situations for the Leafs, but he’ll be a surefire boost to their second power-play unit and should thrive in Jim Hiller’s system.
