Who gives a heck about the World Junior’s?
It’s no secret less and less fans are watching the World Junior’s these days. BOTH in person, on TV and On Line.
When the IIHF decided to award the city of Buffalo, New York the World’s Junior for the second time in 8 years, they really figured they could return to a market where they’d be beloved once again. BOY WERE THEY WRONG!
While the Buffalo Bills are going to the playoffs for the first time since the end of the Ottoman Empire, Buffalo has given up hope in hockey. A city that exists solely because it’s close to a road Canadians drive through, Buffalo has catastrophically failed at doing this event well. Most likely, it’s because the Leafs are good. Not only has there failed to be a single sell out for an American game, the Canadian team is unable to do so as well. Because everyone’s watching the Leafs instead!
Sabres top prospect’s Casey Mittelstadt and Alex Nylander could each put up 9 goals today and they’d probably have a puck to give to every Sabres fan there. Why show up with hope about future in the team that’s consistently shown it has none?
You could point to ticket prices being THROUGH THE ROOF FOR JUNIOR HOKCEY! And you’d be right! No one should pay for that garbage!
But more importantly, the Leafs are giving fans something worth watching and they didn’t do that for a long time. The NHL’s best Canadian team, the Leafs have given Toronto, and apparently everyone in a four-hour radius of Buffalo as well, good hockey to watch. Good PROFESSIONAL hockey.
With the Leaf’s game tonight against the San Jose Sharks, you can be there will be about 170 fans in all of Ontario watching the World Juniors.
Formerly, December and early January represented a time of hope in Toronto, seeing Canadian players like former Toronto Marlie-contract approach John Tavares, or Calgary’s William Nylander.
What’s the big draw on this year’s tournament? Ottawa Senators second round pick Alex Formenton? lol c’mon! Imagine watching that over Auston Matthews!
Also of note, the Leafs would dominate the Canadian junior team. The Leafs are Canada’s team.
