J.S. Giguère thinks creating a healthy competition between Stolarz & Woll isn’t a bad thing: Leafs Morning Take

After a pair of games on the road, the Leafs are back home to take on the Anaheim Ducks.
Let’s hope for a better start after whatever that was in New Jersey on Tuesday night. At least they got the win, right?
We kicked off the Thursday edition of Leafs Morning Take by discussing some waiver news. In case you missed it, both Alex Nylander and Dakota Mermis, who’s working his way back from injury, were placed on waivers on Wednesday afternoon. If both clear, they will head down to the AHL’s Marlies. At any rate, it was really cool to see the Nylander brothers play together in the NHL, but unquestionably, it had become abundantly clear that Alex was better suited to play in the AHL.
After that mini conversation, we preview Leafs and Ducks. Anaheim’s coming off a 5-1 loss in Ottawa last night. Somewhat surprisingly, Anthony Stolarz, who used to play for the Ducks, will get the call. He’s coming off a marvellous 38 saves performance against the Devils. Additionally, we talked about Jake McCabe’s imminent return to the lineup. After missing five games with an upper body injury, it looks like he’s ready to return. Toronto’s start will be fascinating to document in this one. They’ve surrendered the first goal in four straight outings. Nothing like a wounded Ducks team to get the boys going again, right? We’ll see.
Meantime, brought to you by Charm Diamond Centres, J.S. Giguere, who played for both Anaheim and Toronto in his career dropped by for another visit. Naturally, we focused on the Leafs’ crease —namely Stolarz. We talked about his career breakout, his tandem partnership with Joseph Woll, and if he has a legitimate shot to win the Vezina Trophy this season.
Lastly, we answered the Great Clips inbox question of the week. It was about the third line and who we see as a potential long-term fit with Fraser Minten and Max Domi.
