After months of analysis and debate, the day we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived.
It’s the most anticipated Maple Leafs regular-season game in recent memory. And, that’s not an exaggeration either.
Toronto is in Vegas, which means it’s time to square off with Mitch Marner for the very first time.
We kicked off Thursday’s edition of Leafs Morning Take with a scene-setter from Las Vegas. David Pagnotta filled in for Jay Rosehill, and with both of us in town, we’re set to take in tonight’s festivities at T-Mobile Arena. This one feels different, there’s no question about it. Marner will garner the headlines, but don’t forget about Nicolas Roy, too. He played an underrated role in Vegas’ march to the Stanley Cup in the spring of 2023. We had a great debate/ back and forth about the Marner narrative. Pagnotta thinks there shouldn’t be any animosity toward the player, I disagreed. To each their own, but indisputably, Marner’s lack of transparency and defensiveness with the media didn’t help his reputation. This will be fun to document.
Meantime, lost in all the hoopla is the vitalness of this game for Toronto. With Buffalo’s win on Wednesday night, the Leafs are back on the outside looking in when it comes to the Eastern Conference playoff picture. On top of that, they need to find a way to respond following Tuesday night’s ugly 6-1 loss in Utah. Still, the Leafs are 8-1-2 over their past 11 games, so there’s reason to feel good about this team right now. Furthermore, they’re 1-1-0 through two games of their four-game road trip. Joseph Woll will get the call. He’s 9-1-1 over his past 11 appearances. Also, Adin Hill could make his return for Vegas in this one, too. Toronto’s power play is 2-for-14 over the past six games.
After that, the fabulous Jackie Redmond (TNT/WWE)/Leafs super-fan) stopped by the show to weigh in on what’s to come. We looked back at Marner’s tenure as a Maple Leaf. Additionally, we circled back to Toronto’s approach to this game. Again, it’s a big one in the standings. Yes, the REVENGE narrative is strong, but the Leafs need to focus on the two points, too. Additionally, Redmond weighed in on how she feels about how everything unfolded, and also where this current team is headed.
Jay Rosehill will be back for the Friday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Without question, he will have plenty to say in reaction to what transpires on the ice. In addition to recapping Leafs/Golden Knights, we’ll look ahead to the final game of the four game road trip on Saturday night when Toronto visits Winnipeg.
