It’s shaping up to be a wild offseason across the NHL.
The Stanley Cup was handed out just a week ago, and already we’ve seen a flurry of major moves around the league—with plenty more still to come.
On Sunday, the biggest bombshell yet dropped as Ottawa dealt captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers for three first-round picks and a second-rounder. Unsurprisingly, that’s where the conversation started on the Monday edition of Leafs Morning Take as draft week officially got underway. Indisputably, the Leafs can learn a few things from how the Brady Tkachuk situation unfolded in Ottawa. Right now, the noise surrounding Auston Matthews has quieted down, but as we just learned in the nation’s capital, you never really know what’s happening behind the scenes until something actually happens.
Additionally, we discussed what all of this could mean for Matthew Knies, his value on the trade market, and whether it makes any sense to move a player like that when you’re clearly trying to build a contender. Meantime, we touched on the Sergei Bobrovsky rumours. There’s been plenty of chatter over the past few days that the Leafs could have interest in the 37-year-old, two-time Stanley Cup champion if he reaches the open market. We weighed the pros and cons of a potential fit in Toronto.
Elsewhere, we gave some well-deserved love to the Toronto Marlies, who captured the Calder Cup on Friday night by disposing of Chicago in five games. Unsurprisingly, Artur Akhtyamov took home playoff MVP honours after a stellar postseason performance. Looking ahead, it will be fascinating to see how many of the Marlies’ standout players can make the jump and earn full-time roles with the Maple Leafs.
After that, The Athletic’s James Mirtle stopped by to break down the biggest talking points surrounding the Maple Leafs as draft week gets underway. Naturally, the conversation started with Ottawa’s stunning decision to trade Brady Tkachuk to Florida and what lessons Toronto can learn from the situation. Mirtle stressed the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with Auston Matthews and his camp, noting that while Matthews appears committed to the Leafs for now, his long-term future will likely be tied to the organization’s ability to build a consistent contender around him. Mirtle also weighed in on the Matthew Knies trade speculation, explaining that Toronto’s lack of premium assets is a big reason why Knies’ name continues to surface in rumours. From there, he touched on the Sergei Bobrovsky buzz, questioning whether the fit makes sense if the veteran goaltender is seeking significant term and money. Finally, Mirtle shared his thoughts on the Leafs’ aggressive sign-and-trade for Darren Raddysh, acknowledging the risk involved while understanding why Toronto felt it needed to take a swing on a player who fills a major organizational need.
Plenty more to come on Tuesday’s edition of Leafs Morning Take as Ryan Leslie is slated to stop by the show!
