The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered another loss on Thursday night, falling 3-2 in overtime to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Despite the loss, it was one of the team’s more complete efforts as of late.
Speaking after the game Thursday night, John Tavares addressed the positives the team will take as they continue to try and right the ship of their season.
“Our game is building, it’s getting better,” Tavares said. “We did a lot of good things, especially in the first half of the game. Then, they’re able to capitalize and make a couple of good plays and they go up two … it was hard fought and our game was better, but obviously you don’t end up on the right side of it.”
A bright spot on Thursday night was a strong game from Easton Cowan, who assisted Tavares on his third period tying goal to force overtime. Cowan has stepped up with some big minutes since being called back up to the Leafs last week, showing off how he can contribute in all facets of the game.
“I think he’s come a long way,” Tavares said. “His ability to read the game and make little plays, just like he did on my goal. He just lays it in there, not too quick, just in the right spot with the right pace on it, just an easy play for me to put in. And he seems to be stronger on the puck, absorbing contact, things like that. You saw it throughout the game and I thought it was evident in overtime as well. He’s playing really well and credit to him the way he’s not tried to do too much or focus too much on things offensively, but just tried to be consistent with his game in all areas.”
Thursday night’s goal showcased the chemistry the rookie and the veteran have been building together, with Cowan earning more opportunity amidst a flurry of injuries. Tavares spoke about their growing on-ice relationship after the game.
“It’s been good,” Tavares said. “When we’ve played together, there’s been some good moments, and an ability to play off one another. Understand where the open space is, where the puck’s going, and how to support one another. Yeah, he’s obviously a really talented kid.”
Cowan, Tavares, and the Maple Leafs will travel to face the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
