The Toronto Maple Leafs announced a flurry of roster moves on Friday, headlined by goalie Joseph Woll being activated from his conditioning stint.
The move indicates that Woll could be in line to make his season debut on Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks. He recently finished his conditioning stint, where he went 0-1-1, recorded a .885 SV% and a 3.72 GAA in one and a half games of action.
Woll was granted a leave of absence on September 23 and ended up being away from the team for over a month before resuming practices with the team in recent weeks. While he did not specify his reasoning for his extended absence, he expressed gratitude to the Leafs for their support during his time away from the team.
“I’ve really been blown away at how much support I’ve received and with that, a big thank you to my teammates as well and I’ve expressed that to them, just for all the support they’ve given,” he said on November 7. “I want to thank you guys. I know I asked for privacy and you guys (Leafs media) have granted me that, so I really appreciate that as well.”
Artur Akhtyamov was assigned back to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies after serving as the backup in Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings. Dennis Hildeby, who got the start in that contest, will revert to being the backup until Anthony Stolarz returns to the lineup. He missed the previous contest after getting hurt sometime in the first period against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday after a net-front scrum, and he’ll be sidelined with an upper-body injury.
Captain Auston Matthews, who was already ruled out of action for at least a week, was placed on injured reserve retractive to November 11. Matthews took a hit to the letters from Bruins defenceman Nikita Zadorov and later threw a retaliatory hit against the towering defender, and one of these hits triggered something that evolved into a lower-body injury, although it’s unclear which one it was. Both him and Stolarz, according to head coach Craig Berube, are listed as day-to-day and their respective injuries are not considered serious.
Easton Cowan slots back into the mix after having been assigned to the Marlies on November 5 in the wake of Scott Laughton’s return to the lineup. Prior to his reassignment, Cowan had been scratched three times, tallying one goal and three assists in his 10 appearances. He ended up playing in two AHL games where he tallied one assist, but was a scratch during the Marlies’ most recent contest, which suggested he would be heading back to the NHL in short order.
