Eventually someone was going to have to come in for Matt Murray and it looks like the Leafs have chosen to reward the strong play for Joseph Woll with a promotion up to the Leafs.
Woll has had a 12-1-0, .928 save percentage performance with the Marlies coming out of his lengthy injury to kick off the season. His shoulder apparently healed up the same way that kid in Rookie of the Year’s did and now he’s some kind of super goalie.
Woll will be wearing a ball cap tonight as Samsonov takes on his former club, but maybe the Leafs will give Woll a start in Boston on Wednesday, as it might be a fitting first start of the season for the Boston College alumnus. I wouldn’t hold my breath and Woll is likely just here to be the safety net.
As you can see from above there are a few other moves that were known that have been official. Matthews is officially on the injured reserve which really just means the Leafs can’t use him until after the All-Star break and it frees up a roster spot. And TJ Brodie was practicing on the top pairing for tonight, so his activation from the injured reserve isn’t a particular shock either.
As for Bobby McMann, his demotion comes a little earlier than expected as it seemed he would be sticking with the Leafs until the All-Star break before being sent down to the Marlies, but it seems the Leafs want to use Wayne Simmonds in the next couple of games so McMann might as well play on the Marlies for now. It’s very likely he’ll make a return in February. His move to the Marlies was also somewhat made necessary by the Leafs keeping Matt Murray on their roster for now and putting him on the IR. Keefe said the Leafs were waiting for the test results on Murray before making a decision on him, so things can change again once Murray’s status is more certain.
Additionally, the Leafs will only be able to get this one last game out of Joey Anderson before deciding if they want to demote him or risk losing him on waivers if they keep him in the lineup against Boston, so we’ll see some additional roster shuffles coming in the next few days.
