Leafs Geeks Podcast – What Hockey Can Learn From Basketball

By Ian Tulloch

This week I’m joined by Chris Watkins (better known as @yolo_pinyato on Twitter). We’re both huge fans of the NBA, so we thought it would be fun to use our knowledge of basketball analytics and apply some of the concepts to hockey. We tend to learn a lot from other sports (ie. Expected Goals from soccer), so it was a pretty interesting discussion. Here’s a list of the topics we dove into:
2:50 – Why the NBA’s analytics are so much better than the NHL’s.
12:18 – Finding ways to quantify chemistry.
29:56 – “Pace & Space” in the NHL.
40:50 – “Spacing” on the Power Play.
1:02:08 – Impacts of coaching in each sport.

As always, you can find the podcast on iTunes and SoundCloud.
Hope you enjoy the episode, it was one of my favourites that I’ve done so far. Cheers! ?
