The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly parted ways with director of amateur scouting Mark Leach and senior advisor of player personnel Dave Morrison, according to a report from Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun.
The move follows the report from earlier in the day that assistant general manager Daryl Metcalf would be leaving the organization. It continues a seismic shift in the front office that previously included the departure of longtime salary cap specialist and Assistant General Manager Brandon Pridham.
The move was a surprising one, given the circumstances. While it’s not surprising to see a new general manager clean house to bring in his own employees, the firing of Leach comes after the Leafs had what was widely viewed as the most successful draft they’ve had in a couple of years. Leach was also only hired one year ago, making this an extremely short tenure for their draft head. Morrison, on the other hand, didn’t have as substantial of a role in the organization, but he had been with the organization since 2004-05, so that move was rather unexpected as well.
It’s unknown as of now whether general manager John Chayka is going to immediately fill these roles and whether it will come via an internal promotion or an external hire. With Judd Brackett recently joining the organization as assistant general manager, Chayka has already started filling out the front office with his own candidates, so it’s likely a position that gets filled before the summer is over.
The Maple Leafs recently announced an overhaul of their coaching staff, bringing in Daniel Alfredsson as associate coach and John Gruden, and Brad Werenka as assistants. They also announced Steve Sullivan, who was their assistant coach in the second half of 2025-26, as the new head coach of the Toronto Marlies on Thursday.
