Well, that was an interesting weekend.
At last, we’ve reached the final day of Mitch Marner’s tenure as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Suffice it is to say, we had a lot to talk about on the Monday edition of Leafs Morning Take. While many of you are stoked and well into your Canada Day plans, we’re prepping for what is sure to be a wild and chaotic next 24 hours across the NHL. From the Maple Leafs perspective, it’s too early to tell how active they will truly be. There’s a lot of moving parts.
We kicked off the podcast by weighing in on the draft. As expected, there were several technical hiccups, and all in all, we would like to see the old format back pronto. From a draft standpoint, the Leafs had a quiet weekend, which was expected considering their lack of picks. In total, they made six selections. For what it’s worth, Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis thinks the Leafs did fine/well for what they had to play with him. Only time will tell.
After that, brought to you by GRETA BAR YYZ, we got into the Knies extension. Once again, it was so refreshing to see a fair outcome, something that hasn’t happened much over the past decade. In short order, Knies has rapidly ascended in Toronto, and he deserved every bit of this contract. He earned it. Most importantly, the two sides worked feverishly to come together ahead of any offer sheet noise. SIX MORE YEARS, baby!
Furthermore, since he didn’t get to on Friday, Rosey gave his thoughts on the John Tavares extension, too. Unsurprisingly, he liked it. Brad Treliving’s two-for-two thus far. Let’s see what he can whip up over the next few days.
Then, we got into all the Marner/Vegas drama. Extortion? Blackmail? Just another chapter to add to this lovely story. Obviously, it would be great to see the Leafs get some compensation. That said, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if they didn’t. But honestly, what a bombshell for Elliotte Friedman to drop. Just in case, go buy some popcorn, it feels like this story is far from over.
Lastly, we went over some names to potentially monitor over the next 24 hours. Of course, Brad Marchand was at the top of that list. Other names: Andrew Mangiapane, Brandon Tanev, and Aaron Ekblad. With that in mind, Tuesday is Canada Day, which only means one thing in the NHL world: FREE AGENT FRENZY. Join us beginning at 2PM ET for an early breakdown of Toronto’s activity in the free agent market.
