Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nikita Grebenkin has been called up from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, while Connor Dewar has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to January 20, the team confirmed Saturday.
Grebenkin was called up by the Maple Leafs earlier this season, going without a point during a seven-game stretch in late November through early December, and was returned to the Marlies on December 14 when Bobby McMann returned to the lineup. The 21-year-old was quickly becoming a fan favourite due to his physical style of play and his personality. Grebenkin took part in Saturday’s optional skate.
Dewar is eligible to return on January 27. He was previously ruled out for Wednesday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Dewar has recorded three assists in 29 games, and Grebenkin could make a real dent in the lineup if he’s able to produce at the NHL level during his second stint with the Maple Leafs.
Toronto is facing several injuries to its forward corps, with John Tavares, Matthew Knies and Max Pacioretty out of the lineup. Tavares is on injured reserve, Knies is considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury, while Pacioretty is on injured reserve retroactive to January 18. It’s been arguably the story of the Leafs’ season, as the team remains atop the Atlantic Division, while weathering several ailments across the board.
In corresponding news, Anthony Stolarz has joined the Maple Leafs for the optional skate ahead of Saturday’s game against the Ottawa Senators. Stolarz remains on injured reserve, but could return as early as Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Wild, as head coach Craig Berube indicated that the 31-year-old goaltender is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a procedure to remove a loose body in his knee.
Joseph Woll is the projected starter for Saturday’s game.
