The Toronto Maple Leafs have selected goaltender Patriks Plumins with the 114th pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Plumins, 18, was ranked 18th among European goaltenders according to NHL Central Scouting’s rankings. He’s the second goaltender taken by the Maple Leafs on day two of the draft, following the selection of Finnish netminder Juusi Ainasto with the 85th overall pick of the draft.
Plumins did not have too many eyes on him in 2025-26, playing in his home country of Latvia in his draft year, but he excelled there with a goals-against average (GAA) of .927 and a save percentage (SV%) of 1.50 in 16 games. He also excelled at the U18 World Championships for Team Latvia, putting together a GAA of 1.62 and a SV% of .947 despite a record of 2-3-0.
Below is an excerpt from DailyFaceoff’s Steven Ellis on Plumins following a 5-2 win over Team USA at the U18 Worlds.
“What a game for Plumins – the best of his life. He made 43 saves in this one, allowing just one goal at even strength. The potential late-round pick has been solid at this event, often showcasing his quick leg work and stout puck-tracking. I also like that he never really overreacts to shots, which can often happen in a game when a goalie’s getting pummeled in their own end.”
Plumins possesses good size, standing at 6-foot-3 and 216 pounds, and he has a strong glove hand along with solid puck-handling abilities. Given that the Latvian league is among the weaker ones across the pond, Plumins will almost certainly be a long-term project for the Maple Leafs, but again – take a look at Artur Akhtyamov’s performance for the Toronto Marlies during their Calder Cup run, and it helps support the case for taking a gamble on goalies even if you appear to have a surplus.
It’s unknown as of now where Plumins will be playing in 2025-26.
