UPDATE: Mitch Marner has been ruled out of Tuesday’s game with a lower-body injury, the team announced on Tuesday.
Mitch Marner and Oliver Ekman-Larsson are game-time decisions for tonight’s matchup against the Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed after morning skate in Calgary.
Berube also confirmed that while Joseph Woll didn’t skate today, he will get the start Tuesday, shutting down rumours that Anthony Stolarz would make his return.
Marner was absent once again today for the team’s full skate, while Ekman-Larsson took to the ice. The two skaters both missed practice yesterday for a ‘maintenance day,’ according to Leafs PR.
Speaking after practice, the Leafs seemed uncertain about Marner’s status, per Sportsnet’s Luke Fox. Berube himself wasn’t able to offer much about what was going on with the Canadian winger:
“I don’t know. Something happened in the game, I guess. Just not feeling right in certain areas, so we’re trying to work on it. Trying to get him ready.”
Nylander echoed the sentiment, saying he “had no clue something was going on.”
Maple Leafs decidedly vague about Mitch Marner's absence from two skates and status as a game-time decision.
Former captain John Tavares offered some further perspective on Marner’s status:
“To get to this point of the year, 50-plus games, there’s a lot going on, obviously, in terms of just the grind and what you go through, and the aches and pains and all that… Played great the other night. Hopefully he’s a go tonight.”
Ekman-Larsson is also questionable, after leaving Saturday’s matchup against the Edmonton Oilers early with a lower-body injury.
The Swedish defender has been a key addition for the Leafs this season after signing a four-year, $14 million contract with the team in July.
Between the pipes, Woll will start a fourth consecutive match for Toronto against Calgary. Missing the gameday skate is not uncommon for the 26-year-old goaltender who has wins in four of his last six contests.
Stolarz skated today, continuing his progress towards return. While Berube shut down speculation he would get the start in Calgary, he left the door open to him starting Thursday against the Seattle Kraken.
The 31-year-old goaltender hasn’t played since exiting a December 12 contest against the Anaheim Ducks with a lower-body injury, then undergoing knee surgery.
Meanwhile, the Leafs are looking to build on their recent power play success, firing at 33.3% in their last 10 games.
The team picked up a goal from both their first and second units on the power play Saturday, as Toronto went 2-for-2 with the man advantage against the Oilers.
In today’s skate, they ran the following PP lines, per David Alter.
PP1: Morgan Rielly, Auston Matthews, John Tavares, William Nylander, Matthew Knies
PP2: Jake McCabe/Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Max Domi, Bobby McMann, Nick Robertson, Max Pacioretty.
