Toronto Maple Leafs skaters Mitch Marner and Oliver Ekman-Larsson were not on the ice for practice Monday, ahead of Tuesday night’s matchup against the Calgary Flames.
Marnwr and Ekman-Larsson were reportedly out for a maintenance day, Leafs PR confirmed.
There remains some concern Ekman-Larsson could possibly miss time after leaving Saturday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers with a lower-body injury. He played just over five minutes before leaving the bench.
Meanwhile, Marner had a goal and an assist on Saturday with over 18 minutes played. In classic cryptic Leafs fashion, head coach Craig Berube would not confirm whether either player would suit up for Tuesday’s contest, according to Sportsnet’s Luke Fox.
Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz were the only goalies to skate in practice, via The Hockey News’ David Alter. As reported by Fox, Berube left open the possibility of Anthony Stolarz returning between the pipes for Toronto tomorrow night.
Stolarz hasn’t played since mid-December after undergoing knee surgery, but it was recently reported that he’s very close to getting back in action.
Ahead of practice, the Leafs called up defenceman Dakota Mermis from the Toronto Marlies, assigning forward Fraser Minten to the minors in return. It appears Toronto is preparing themselves with an extra defenceman in the event Ekman-Larsson is unable to take to the ice in Calgary.
Mermis has played 12 games with the Toronto Marlies after being claimed off waivers from the Utah Hockey Club earlier this year. The defenseman registered three assists through his stint in the minors.
In Marner’s absence, Domi filled in his spot on the top line. The Winnipeg native has points in back-to-back games, but hasn’t scored in over a month. His last goal came against the Buffalo Sabres on December 20th of last year.
Jake McCabe and Chris Tanev paired up on the top defensive line, while Phillippe Myers took Ekman-Larsson’s spot with Morgan Rielly.
