Heading into week 13 of the regular season, the Toronto Maple Leafs were coming off a tough 5-2 loss to the Capitals and had lost three of their previous four games. They opened last week with a New Year’s Eve matinee against the Islanders and did not look back, as they got back in the win column and continued their winning ways into 2025.
3rd Star: Joseph Woll
Week 13 stats: 3 GP – 3-0-0 – 2.00 GAA – .937 SV% – 0 SO
Season stats: 19 GP – 13-6-0 – 2.48 GAA – .914 SV% – 1 SO
Anthony Stolarz remains sidelined with a lower-body injury he sustained in the first period against the Anaheim Ducks on December 12th, meaning Joseph Woll continues to be the starter for the time being.
The 2016 third-round pick native started the first three games last week and went undefeated (3-0-0), helping improve his season record to 13-6-0 while continuing to be a stable presence between the pipes.
After allowing nine goals in two losses before his start on New Year’s Eve, Woll rebounded against the Red Wings on December 27th, thus beginning his current win streak of four games. In the three games last week, he allowed just six goals, with four coming in his final start of the week. His impressive week against the Islanders and Bruins earned him a .937 save percentage, bumping his season save percentage up to .914, which is good enough for 8th in the NHL and tied with Karel Vejmelka and Andrei Vasilevskiy.
2nd Star: Mitch Marner
Week 13 stats: 4 GP – 1 G – 5 A – 6 PTS
Season stats: 41 GP – 14 G – 42 A – 56 PTS
Mitch Marner has just continued to be a dominant force in his contract year, thanks to a five-point game on Saturday night against the Bruins, leapfrogging him up to 56 points on the season.
With or without Auston Matthews in the lineup, the Markham, Ontario native has produced. In two games without Matthews last week, Marner registered a single assist between two low-event games against the Islanders. Following the captain’s return to the lineup, Marner and his line erupted for a monster night against the Bruins, highlighting a perfect week for the team.
Marner’s five-point night – one goal and four assists – not only catapulted him into the NHL’s top five in scoring, but the pending UFA recorded his fifth 5-point game as a Maple Leaf, tying him for the second most in franchise history with Babe Dye, according to SportsnetStats.

1st Star: Matthew Knies
Week 13 stats: 4 GP – 4 G – 2 A – 6 PTS
Season stats: 39 GP – 15 G – 10 A – 25 PTS
If there was a forward on the Maple Leafs who needed to get going again, it was Matthew Knies. Heading into last week’s slate of games, Knies was on a seven-game goal drought and had just five points in his previous 14 games. He didn’t find the scoresheet in either game against the Islanders, but similar to Marner and Matthews, the 22-year-old had a terrific night on Saturday, recording his first career hat trick and adding two assists for his first career five-point night, en route to a 6-4 win over their rivals.
Less than 24 hours after the best game of his young career, Knies found the back of the net against the Flyers for his 15th goal of the season, matching his total from last year in 80 games. Suddenly, after entering last week with 19 points in 35 games, the Phoenix, Arizona native now sits at 25 points in 39 games, just 10 points shy of matching his point total from last season with 41 games to go.
