It appears that the Toronto Maple Leafs are quickly finalizing the rest of their coaching staff for the 2026-27 season. Toronto parted ways with assistant coach Mike Van Ryn, according to The Leafs Nation’s Nick Alberga.
Van Ryn joined the Maple Leafs in July 2023. He developed under Craig Berube, serving as an assistant with the St. Louis Blues before being fired in April 2023. Van Ryn won a Stanley Cup on Berube’s staff in 2019, and has previously worked as a head coach for the Kitchener Rangers (OHL) and Tucson Roadrunners (AHL).
The 47-year-old played 353 games in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues and Florida Panthers, before spending the final season of his career with the Maple Leafs in 2008-09.
It will be compelling to see how head coach Jim Hiller rounds out his staff. Hiller told reporters Thursday that there are still decisions to be made regarding his staff, and it appears Van Ryn is the first coach to leave the new regime. Hiller was formally introduced on Thursday, after being hired on June 17.
“Yeah, I have talked to them,” Hiller said Thursday. “We haven’t made any commitments as far as what the staff will look like. I am certainly talking to other people. We are going through an interview process. Very much like John and Mats, as they set their agenda out, they were very thorough. They talked to a lot of people. They did not rush. I think it is a really responsible way to go about it. I am trying to follow a similar path, keep them involved, and just make sure I am feeling like I’ve done the work required.”
It appears that for the time being, Derek Lalonde and Steve Sullivan remain on staff. Sullivan was hired midway through the 2025-26 season, where he rejuvenated a dormant power play, amid a lost season under Berube’s supervision. The Leafs Nation will keep you posted for every step of the way, as Hiller fills out of his staff, amid a transformative period for the franchise.
