Nikita Grebenkin has been sent down to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, while Toronto Maple Leafs forward Bobby McMann has been officially activated from injured reserve, the team revealed Saturday.
McMann will return to the lineup for Saturday’s contest against the Detroit Red Wings after a seven-game absence and hasn’t played since suffered an injury against the Florida Panthers on November 27. The 28-year-old will be placed alongside Fraser Minten and Max Domi on Toronto’s new-look third line. He has recorded six goals and seven points in 21 games. McMann can play throughout the lineup, but Max Pacioretty is coming off his best game of the season and will be playing alongside John Tavares and William Nylander, while Toronto’s first line of Matthew Knies, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner remains intact.
“I’ve definitely been skating a good amount, I didn’t miss a lot of time off the ice,” McMann said Friday via Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun. “The game speed is always something that takes a bit of an adjustment. But not being out that long, I don’t think it’ll be too hard, and I trust I’ll rely on what works well for me.”
Grebenkin was called up on Thursday but did not play against the Anaheim Ducks, while Marshall Rifai was sent down to the Marlies. The 21-year-old has played in seven games for the Maple Leafs and has not recorded a point, but has been lauded for his physicality and is a rising prospect within the organization. Grebenkin’s demotion ultimately clears space for McMann to return the lineup, as the Maple Leafs have faced several injuries to their forward corps through the opening 29 games of the season.
McMann’s elite straight-line speed and opportunism are key assets for a Maple Leafs team that has struggled to generate meaningful 5-on-5 offence, while relying disproportionately on Matthews, Marner, Knies, Tavares and Nylander to generate goals. It will be an eventful weekend for the Maple Leafs with McMann back in the mix, with a back-to-back, as the Maple Leafs host the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday.
