The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Wednesday that Brad Treliving has been hired as the 18th general manager in team history.

This announcement comes as no surprise. Treliving had been <a href="https://theleafsnation.com/news/report-maple-leafs-gm-search-flames-gm-brad-treliving">rumoured to be the frontrunner for the position</a> shortly after Kyle Dubas was let go and TSN&#8217;s Darren Dreger reported on Tuesday that <a href="https://theleafsnation.com/news/report-brad-treliving-expected-to-be-named-the-18th-general-manager-in-maple-leafs-history">the team&#8217;s search for his successor was wrapping up</a>.

We are confident that Brad&#8217;s leadership and strategic vision will elevate the Maple Leafs in our continued pursuit of a championship.&#8221;

Treliving spent over a decade with the Phoenix Coyotes in various roles before replacing Jay Feaster as the general manager of the Calgary Flames ahead of the 2014-15 season. He led the Flames to five playoff appearances over the course of nine seasons and <a href="https://flamesnation.ca/news/calgary-flames-and-brad-treliving-announce-he-will-not-return-as-general-manager">parted ways with the organization following a disappointing result in 2022-23</a>.
The 53-year-old will have some interesting challenges ahead of him as he takes over the Maple Leafs. Both Auston Matthews and William Nylander are eligible to sign contract extensions on July 1 while Mitch Marner and John Tavares have contracts that are set to expire following the 2024-25 season. Treliving will also have to decide whether to retain the likes of Luke Schenn, Ryan O&#8217;Reilly, and Noel Acciari, who are unrestricted free agents this summer.
