On Tuesday’s edition of TSN’s Insider Trading, Gino Reda, Chris Johnston, Pierre LeBrun, and Darren Dreger spoke at length about the Toronto Maple Leafs’ search for a new general manager after the organization parted ways with Kyle Dubas late last week.
Dreger reported that the Maple Leafs have begun their search with former Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving.
“I want to take you back to last Friday,” Dreger said. “Brendan Shanahan laid out the parameters very thoroughly I would say, and right near the top of his list is an experienced General Manager. I believe that they’ve engaged with Brad Treliving, so the process is underway. What I don’t expect Shanahan and company to do is go through a process similar to what Calgary did, likewise, what Pittsburgh is doing in search of their general manager, where they identify as many as maybe a dozen candidates to interview. This could be a week, it could be more, no specific timeline, but again, they’re leaning on experience.”
Treliving was the general manager for nine seasons in Calgary before stepping away from his position this offseason after the team failed to make the postseason after Treliving made the blockbuster trade that brought Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar to the Flames and sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers.
Dreger also added that a high-ranking source within the St. Louis Blues organization told him that the rumours of Blues GM Doug Armstrong coming to the Leafs are “fabrication.”
