Amid a three-game losing streak, the Toronto Maple Leafs are making several changes to Monday’s lineup, as they take on the unbeaten Winnipeg Jets. TSN’s John Lu posted the practice lines, and it appears that head coach Craig Berube has seen enough to shake up his groups.
Nick Robertson will be a healthy scratch for the first time this season and will be replaced by Pontus Holmberg, who was the odd man out in Saturday’s overtime loss to the Boston Bruins. Conor Timmins also returns to the lineup, after being scratched while Philippe Myers made his season debut — it also continues to call into question when Timothy Liljegren will get some playing time, after making his lone appearance in an October 16 win against the Los Angeles Kings.
John Tavares will centre a line with William Nylander and Max Pacioretty on his wings. Tavares has functioned as Toronto’s third-line centre and it reconfigures Toronto’s top-nine format. Nylander had primarily played on the wing, alongside Max Domi and Bobby McMann, and that group often was used as the starting unit. During the three-game losing streak, Nylander and McMann struggled throughout the week and Berube will get another look at some new combos, while the first and fourth lines remain untouched.
Robertson was Toronto’s preseason MVP and earned his spot in the lineup, but he’s registered one goal in nine contests and the Maple Leafs will need greater production from him if he is to maintain his role among the top-nine forwards, on a team that has a real surplus.
Anthony Stolarz is the projected starter for Monday’s game. Stolarz and Woll were expected to work as a tandem, but Woll was placed on injured reserve on opening night and made his return in a 5-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday. Stolarz is now operating as the true No. 1, with a 3-2-1 record and .927 save percentage through the opening month of the season.
Perhaps the most notable item are the amendments to the power play. Toronto struggled to the tune of a 3-of-30 clip through the opening nine games and Matthew Knies was promoted to the first unit in the net-front spot, taking John Tavares’ place. Morgan Rielly is back on the first unit as well, while Oliver Ekman-Larsson slides back to the second unit. William Nylander was also placed on the second unit, while Max Pacioretty took reps with the top group and in theory, this should provide Toronto’s power play with greater balance.
