All good things must come to an end, and mercifully for the rest of the OHL, Easton Cowan’s historic regular season point streak was broken this past week. For the first time in 65 games and nearly 15 months, Cowan failed to register a point in a regular season contest when his London Knights picked up a 3-1 victory over the Peterborough Petes on Friday night.
Cowan’s production this season hasn’t been quite up to par with the explosive pace he scored at last season, but he is still having a great season in the OHL, and what he’s done over the last year and a bit is remarkable. Over the course of his 65-game regular-season point streak – which was only disrupted by a pair of OHL playoff games, one in last year’s Memorial Cup, and a couple of underwhelming showings at the World Juniors – Cowan put up 43 goals and 65 assists. That’s a pace of nearly 1.7 points per game for more than a full calendar year, playing in arguably the best junior hockey league on the planet.
Maybe former director of amateur scouting Wes Clark and his team saw this coming when they selected Cowan at the end of the first round in 2023, but they were in the minority if they did. With all that he’s accomplished since then, it’s easy to forget that Cowan was a bit of an off-the-board selection at that point in the draft, and the pick was labelled as a reach by most prospect analysts at the time. Known more for his energetic style of play, he was projected as something of a safer pick who represented a high floor as a bottom-six forward at the NHL level, but Cowan’s offensive outburst has elevated his status in the Leafs’ prospect pipeline and around the league.
Less than two years after he was drafted, Cowan is now considered among the top young players outside the NHL, and he is the Leafs’ unquestioned number-one prospect. With the pressure of maintaining his point streak now behind him, Cowan can put all of his focus toward leading the Knights to another OHL Championship and a shot at redemption in the Memorial Cup this spring before he begins his pro career next fall.
Notes from the rest of the prospect pool:
- Ben Danford busted a four-game scoreless streak with an assist in Wednesday’s blowout win over the Ottawa 67s, and he followed that up with another helper in Friday’s rematch. Danford certainly hasn’t lit the world on fire from the back end for the Oshawa Generals with just 19 points in 45 games this season, but his production has picked up in recent weeks, and so has his defensive impact. Danford has the tools to be a bigger offensive contributor, but he is still working to put it all together while continuing to polish his defensive game.
#Leafs prospect Ben Danford with a nice play that earned him primary assist last night. He's up to 18 points in 45 games this season, with tracking data looks better than the production does. Plays like this are an indication of some offensive ability that just isn't leading to points consistently.

- Artur Akhtyamov has come back down to earth a bit after an outstanding start to his AHL career earlier this season, but he had a second consecutive strong outing in a shootout loss to Laval on Saturday. He stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, bumping his save percentage for the season up to .902 and knocking his GAA down to 2.70 through 18 appearances.
- It was another productive week for Lethbridge Hurricanes captain Noah Chadwick. He scored a goal and added an assist in Friday’s 6-1 victory over Prince Albert, and picked up two more assists in Saturday’s shutout win against the Calgary Hitmen. For the season, Chadwick has posted 11 goals and 30 assists in 48 games.

- Following a brief stint with the Leafs that saw him make his NHL debut, Jacob Quillan is back to making an impact for the Marlies in the AHL. In three games since being reassigned, Quillan has picked up a goal and an assist, bringing him to seven goals and 10 assists in 38 games for the Marlies in his first full season of pro hockey. He isn’t likely to ever become an offensive dynamo, but Quillan does a lot of little things right and could have a future as a valuable depth contributor at the NHL level.
RIGHT ON Q!!! 🚨
- Miroslav Holinka has been on a bit of a tear since returning to the Edmonton Oil Kings after representing Czechia at the World Juniors. He tallied an assist in an overtime loss to Calgary on Friday, then went off for a goal and three more helpers in Saturday’s 6-3 win over Moose Jaw. In his last 10 games, Holinka is on the board for five goals and eight assists, elevating his season totals to 15 goals and 20 assists in 36 games. It’s early, but it looks like the Leafs might have something in their 2024 fifth-round pick.

- Sam McCue has made some noise as a late-round pick this year as well, and it was no different when he took on his former team in Peterborough last Thursday. He scored his 27th goal of the season, picked up an assist, and dropped the gloves after a play that saw his teammate ejected for a slew foot. McCue has all the attributes desired in an NHL fourth liner, but he has also taken his offensive game to another level this season, currently inside the top-20 goal scorers in the OHL. The Leafs have been short on early picks over the last number of years, but the early returns on a couple of late selections in the past couple of drafts have been encouraging.
