Welcome back to another edition of the Toronto Maple Leafs Prospect Roundup! As we near the middle of April, various leagues have started to wind down for the season, but there’s still plenty to cover from the Leafs’ pipeline, so let’s get right into it.
Easton Cowan
Cowan has continued to round into form during the stretch drive and is now riding a three-game point streak after scoring his 10th goal of the season in Saturday’s overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings. The 20-year-old winger hasn’t lit the world on fire in his rookie campaign, but with 26 points through 61 games on a team that has struggled from the outset, he has put together a solid debut season in the NHL, and he has been one of the few bright spots in an ugly season for Toronto. Beyond his offensive contributions, Cowan has looked more and more comfortable dealing with the physicality that comes with playing in the NHL, and he has the potential to grow into a real spark plug for this Leafs team moving forward.

Ben Danford
Danford served his two-game suspension as his teammates wrapped up a first-round sweep of the Sudbury Wolves this past week. Danford and the rest of the Bulldogs are set to take on North Bay in the second round, and his importance to the team will only be magnified the deeper they go in this postseason run. He isn’t going to lead the charge offensively, but Danford has proven to be among the OHL’s best shutdown defenders, and he plays with the type of physical edge that can swing momentum for his club. Perhaps more importantly, he has a wealth of OHL playoff experience, having gone to the last two OHL finals with his former team in Oshawa. You aren’t going to see Danford’s name all over the box score, but he will be a key component in any success Brantford has the rest of the way.
Luke Haymes
Haymes started slowly in his first full AHL season, but he has come on strong in the second half, and he was rewarded with a recall to the big club on Tuesday before being sent back to the Marlies on Wednesday. One could argue that Haymes (and perhaps a couple more Marlies) should have already been in the lineup for a Leafs team that is simply playing out the string, but a few days of NHL pay is still a nice reward for the undrafted forward who has posted 17 goals and 15 assists in 63 games as a rookie in the AHL.
WHILE FALLING DOWN! Luke Haymes gets the Marlies on the board to make it 1-1!
William Villeneuve
Another Marlie that fans have been clamouring to see, Villeneuve was also recalled on an emergency basis, with Oliver Ekman-Larsson battling an injury, but he was sent back to the Marlies on Wednesday. Villeneuve hasn’t put up the same offensive numbers as he did a year ago, and he is far from a surefire NHLer, but he offers a skill set that is different from a lot of the Leafs’ current blueliners, and it is beyond time to see if Villeneuve can be a serviceable option at the next level. Like Haymes, Villeneuve had been skating as an extra at practice, so we’ll have to wait and see if he gets that opportunity in the last few games before rejoining the Marlies for the postseason.
Miroslav Holinka
All good things must come to an end, and Holinka’s outstanding run with the Edmonton Oil Kings came to an end this week. After posting 80 points in 59 games during the regular season, Holinka went on to lead the charge for the Oil Kings in the playoffs, but it wasn’t enough to emerge victorious in game seven of their opening round series against the Saskatoon Blades. The 2024 fifth-rounder led the Oil Kings with seven goals (including the overtime winner in game six) and four assists in seven postseason contests, earning WHL Player of the Week honours, but it was a disappointing finish for a team that had championship aspirations. Already under contract with the Leafs, Holinka is expected to join the Marlies and begin his AHL career before his first full season of pro hockey in 2026-27. He’ll need further development at the AHL level, but Holinka has the chance to become a viable bottom-six option for the Leafs in the next couple of seasons.

Tyler Hopkins
Hopkins scored twice in game four of Guelph’s opening round matchup, but it wasn’t enough to stave off the sweep at the hands of the Windsor Spitfires. It was an up-and-down season for Hopkins that included a midseason trade from Kingston, finishing with 50 points in 56 regular season games, and now, he will finish the campaign on an amateur tryout agreement with the Marlies. Whether he gets into game action remains to be seen as the Marlies are pushing for a playoff spot of their own, but even getting acclimated through practices at the pro level will be a good thing for Hopkins as he wraps up his draft+1 season.

Harry Nansi
Like Hopkins and the Storm, Nansi and his club in Owen Sound were swept in the first round of the OHL playoffs, and he will join Hopkins on an ATO to finish the season with the Marlies. Nansi came out of the gates this season as one of the most productive players in the OHL, but slowed in the second half, finishing with 13 goals and 43 assists in 67 regular season games before being held off the scoresheet in the postseason. Nansi has great playmaking vision and slick hands, but he is still a below-average skater, and that could make it even more difficult for him to get into a game before the AHL schedule wraps up than it might be for Hopkins, who plays with a bit more pace at this stage of his development.
Sam McCue
The Ottawa 67s pulled off a first-round sweep of the Kingston Frontenacs, and McCue might have had the highlight of the series. He scored his first goal of the playoffs in game three, and topped that in game four, hitting a Michigan to open the scoring in the deciding contest of the series. Ottawa will take on the Barrie Colts in the second round of the OHL playoffs, and McCue will be a player to watch, as he could also end up joining the Marlies if Ottawa is unable to advance. Unlike Hopkins and Nansi, McCue is ineligible to return to the OHL next season, so the Leafs will have to decide if he is worthy of an entry-level contract sooner rather than later.
The McCue brothers love playoff Michigan's! Sam McCue takes a page out of Max's book and hits the Michigan to give the @Ottawa67sHockey the lead in game 4! #OTTvsKGN | #OHLPlayoffs | #LeafsForever
