It was quite the Prime Monday Night Hockey debut for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
What a performance!
Speaking of which, we kicked off the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take by giving our take on the Amazon Prime broadcast. Across the board, I thought it came off fresh. From the different camera angles to the crisp picture, I came away really impressed. Over time, you know it will just get better and better, too. Additionally, we broke down Andrei Vasilevskiy’s snow shower of Morgan Rielly in warm up. Honestly, it’s funny how things unfold sometimes. Talk about hockey karma! Also, we loved seeing Max Domi step up for his teammate in the third period against Zemgus Girgensons. This team is so dialled in right now.
Brought to you by Prime Video, we dove into all the nuts and bolts surrounding Toronto’s 5-2 dissection of the Tampa Bay Lightning. That wasn’t a win, that was a statement. First and foremost, we thought the crowd noise on TV sounded different —perhaps that was an accurate representation of what it’s actually like? At any rate, Anthony Stolarz was superb again. Hell, he even got a standing ovation in the second period following Toronto’s two minute 5-on-3 kill. Meantime, the big boys had another monster night: William Nylander had two and one, Mitch Marner tallied two assists, and Auston Matthews scored for the third consecutive game. All in all, I thought the Leafs really had their way with the Bolts. Jon Cooper’s squad had no answers, and quite frankly, I thought they looked rattled for the majority of the night.
Then, we touched on the second half of the back-to-back in Columbus. Will Joseph Woll get the call for his season debut? Any way you slice it, we’re jacked to watch this team go to work again. In the past, a matchup like this has been a trap game, we’ll see if this squad has turned the corner on those, too. Fingers crossed.
Courtesy Charm Diamond Centres, we played our interview with Maple Leaf legend Mats Sundin. In addition to promoting his new book (Home and Away – OUT today!), we got the Hockey Hall of Famer’s thoughts on Matthews getting the captaincy, Craig Berube’s hot start, and what it’s been like to see Max Domi in the blue and white.
Lots ahead on the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take (11 AM ET). Firstly, we’ll recap the Leafs/Blue Jackets game. Then, we’ll start to look ahead to Thursday night’s tilt at home against Craig Berube’s former team. Earlier this week, we caught up with St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn, so you’ll get a chance to check that out.
