Max Domi was the star of the show on Tuesday night against the Calgary Flames, collecting two goals including the game-winner to help the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-3 win.
Domi needed a night like that more than anybody else. He hadn’t scored since the second game of the season, and was a minus-7 on the year heading into Tuesday night’s win. That said, Domi is never one to put his own accomplishments before the success of the team, and it was no different speaking to the media following the game.
“We won today, so nothing else matters man,” Domi said when asked how he felt about his own play. “Honestly, you’re not going to get much in terms of the individual stuff, that stuff is so irrelevant. It’s a long season and we need everyone, every night there’s going to be someone else that steps up, gets some bounces here and there, but we’re a group that relies on every single guy in this room, and I think everyone was going tonight.”
Matthew Knies, who set Domi up for the game-winner, scored two goals of his own to tie him with John Tavares for second on the team in scoring. While Domi will always brush off his own personal achievements, he’s never shy about giving his teammates their flowers.
“He’s a beast,” Domi said of Knies after the game. “He’s been playing some good hockey, obviously had some bounces go here and there for him. Obviously some bounces go here and there for him, but tonight he had the puck on a string. I think, when he goes into traffic and he can come through, it’s like a one-on-three almost, and on the forecheck he somehow comes out with the puck. It’s pretty impressive, it’s a big part of what makes him, him, and he did a great job of that tonight.”
The Maple Leafs are back in action on Wednesday night as they hit the road for Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets.
