Welcome to another edition of NHL Notebook, where we recap current events around the league. As training camps are set to get underway, teams are completing last-second signings, while looking ahead to the new year.
Golden Knights’ Jack Eichel ready for business as usual in contract year
Vegas Golden Knights forward Jack Eichel isn’t doing anything out of the ordinary as he enters the final year of his existing, eight-year deal worth $10 millon per year. Eichel and the Golden Knights are a leading candidate to win the Stanley Cup and he’s not particularly concerned about reaching a new deal, believing it will all work out.
“For me, it’s business as usual,” Eichel said to NHL.com’s Dan Rosen. “Things like that kind of take care of themselves when you’re focused on the right things. I know that will sort itself out. Moreso, my mentality is we’re starting training camp, we’re starting the season and how do I be the best version of myself to help our team win, be a good teammate. We’ll see what happens going forward.”
Eichel signed his current deal while playing for the Buffalo Sabres and was acquired by the Golden Knights in a November 2021 trade. He was an essential part of the Golden Knights’ 2023 Stanley Cup-winning squad and is one of the NHL’s best players, coming off a season where he recorded 28 goals and a career-best 94 points in 77 games. And it doesn’t appear that he’ll be planning on leaving Las Vegas anytime soon.
“It’s no secret that I like it here in Vegas,” Eichel said. “It’s a great organization. I really enjoy living here and being a part of this community.”
Alexandar Georgiev signs 1-year deal with Sabres
Alexander Georgiev signed a one-year, $825,000 deal with the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. The 29-year-old goaltender will compete for playing time alongside Alex Lyon, Devon Levi and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in a busy crease.
Georgiev is coming off a tough year where he was traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the San Jose Sharks in December. Buffalo is making a bet that the 2024-25 season was an anomaly for Georgiev, who was named to the All-Star Game two years ago and is three years removed from leading the NHL with 40 wins.
