Here we go again.
Just prior to the morning skate, the Leafs announced that Auston Matthews is day-to-day with an upper body injury.
Needless to say, that’s where the conversation started on the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Even though the news is far from ideal, there is a silver lining to all this. Believe it or not, weirdly, Toronto’s 35-19-2 all-time without Papi in the lineup. Go figure.
After that, quickly, we talked about Matt Benning. Will he even play a game for the Leafs? Fresh off acquiring the veteran blue liner in the Timothy Liljegren trade last week, he’s reportedly already being shopped. We’ll see where it goes but another deal seems inevitable.
Brought to you by Square, we previewed Toronto’s second meeting of the season with Boston. If you recall, back on October 26th, they fell 4-3 in OT on a Brad Marchand winner at TD Garden. Furthermore, incredibly, Wednesday will mark two years to the last day that Toronto beat Boston in a regular season game. That’s right, November 6th, 2022. Wild stuff. Anthony Stolarz will get the call. Meantime, Max Domi will center the top line alongside Matthew Knies and Mitch Marner. Just for good measure, the B’s are coming off a strong weekend. They notched shutout victories over both Philadelphia and Seattle.
Courtesy Charm Diamond Centres, we then welcomed in the one and only Pierre McGuire for a chat. As per usual, the long-time NHL broadcaster/coach/executive brought the heat. We got his thoughts on the Matthews injury before shifting to some talk about Toronto’s horrendous power play. Pierre was in mid-season form.
Lots to cover on the Wednesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. In addition to recapping the big match-up with the rival Bruins, Brian Burke will drop by to share his thoughts on the Maple Leafs’ year thus far.
