Detroit Red Wings forward Jonatan Berggren has been fined $2,148.44 for cross-checking Toronto Maple Leafs forward Connor Dewar during Saturday’s contest, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced Sunday. It is the maximum allowable amount under the collective bargaining agreement.

Leafs are heading back to the power play after this cross check on Dewar
Although Berggren received the maximum allowable fine under the provisions of the CBA, it’s another example of the routine inconsistency displayed by the NHL Department of Player Safety when it comes to issuing supplementary discipline, as Berggren avoided a suspension. Berggren has not been suspended during his NHL career, and the league does take into account previous history when doling out sanctions.
There doesn’t appear to be a real precedent for what constitutes a suspension and predictably, many fans and analysts across the league appear to be baffled by the decision. Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews was issued a two-game suspension for a similar play against Buffalo Sabres defenceman Rasmus Dahlin, during a March 2022 game, and at the time of this filing, the Department of Player Safety have not released an explanatory video about how they arrived at their decision.
Berggren was issued a two-minute minor for cross-checking during the second period of Saturday’s contest but nothing further came of it. Dewar remained in the game for the Maple Leafs.
Berggren has recorded four goals and six points in 30 games for the Red Wings, while Dewar has recorded an assist in 14 games for the Maple Leafs.
Toronto resumes its schedule Sunday, hosting the Buffalo Sabres, while Detroit returns to action against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.
