As the Toronto Maple Leafs continue their search for a new president of hockey operations and/or general manager, another former NHL executive was reportedly among the finalists.

The Leafs Nation’s Nick Alberga reports that Mike Futa was one of three finalists for the GM role, along with John Chayka and Scott White. Futa reportedly met with MLSE CEO Keith Pelley and the board of directors last week. The 58-year-old has extensive experience in the executive suite, previously serving as a senior consultant for the Carolina Hurricanes. He is perhaps best known for his work as the director of player personnel for the Los Angeles Kings, rising through the ranks.

Chayka is considered the favourite at this stage, while White was lauded for his clever behind-the-scenes work as assistant general manager of the Dallas Stars. It is believed that the Maple Leafs are waiting on Mats Sundin to make an impending decision, before they announce their hires. Sundin would serve as the vice president of hockey operations, while Chayka would operate as the general manager, under this structure.

Toronto is expected to make its decision before the May 5 draft lottery. Pelley previously stated that his candidate would have to be data-driven and that this would be the most important decision of his tenure. Chayka and White certainly fit this profile, while Sundin’s franchise legend status could help provide the franchise with some much-needed good will.

It was previously reported that Boston Bruins assistant general manager Evan Gold was among the finalists, but he’s out of contention. At this stage, it appears very unlikely that the Maple Leafs will elect to promote Brandon Pridham or Ryan Hardy internally.

It will be fascinating to see who the Maple Leafs hire, and if Futa is among the finalists, it’ll be compelling to see how he would interact with Sundin in the new power structure. As the Maple Leafs undergo a period of transition, Futa’s scouting acumen will certainly be counted upon to help bolster a barren prospect pool.
