Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) President and CEO Keith Pelley is reportedly undergoing meetings with people within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.
“Keith Pelley, the president and CEO of MLSE, he is taking one-on-one meetings with different staff throughout the Leafs organization of late. He’s trying to do a deep dive on things,” he said during Thursday’s edition of Insider Trading. “For context, this is something that Pelley also did over the last year with TFC on the soccer side and with the Raptors on the basketball side, but of course, when it comes to the Leafs there’s a little urgency to it. I should point out that Pelley hasn’t limited his meetings to just within the organization, but also meeting with people and picking the brains of people throughout the industry and throughout the league.”
This report comes during a time when there is speculation that significant changes are coming to the Leafs once the regular season concludes has grown in volume. TSN’s Chris Johnston reported during an appearance on First Up on Tuesday that no one inside the organization is feeling safe and that changes are to be expected given that the team didn’t meet expectations. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on The Fan Hockey Show on Thursday that regardless of how things unfold in the forthcoming exit meetings, the Leafs are not going to look the same when the 2026-27 season begins.
Fans have wondered where Pelley fits into all of this, given the fact that he also shares responsibility for things not going according to plan for the Leafs in this campaign. Before this revelation, the only other times there was an inkling of where his head was at with the team were stating it was ‘go time’ during the Board of Governors meetings back in October and then blaming injuries on why the Leafs have struggled in a letter to season ticket holders last month. This latest report marks the first significant update on what Pelley is up to, and it seems that the importance of getting things right this summer has resulted in the meetings commencing now.
“The urgency is that he’s got a decision to make, and more than one, and that starts with the GM position, Brad Treliving, who has one more year left on his contract,” LeBrun continued. “Does Pelley decide to stick with Treliving, or does he decide to make a change there? The off-season is just a couple of weeks away, and if he does decide to make a change – I’m not saying he will, but if he does – then that process itself will require time, and this is a critical off-season for the Leafs if they’re going to bounce back and get this team to the playoffs next year.”
It is worth pointing out that in the same letter to season ticket holders, Pelley did mention that he understood the Leafs’ strengths and weaknesses while noting they wouldn’t reveal the team strategy until a later date due to protecting competitive advantages. How exactly their strategy will be executed remains to be seen at the time of writing, but it certainly doesn’t bode well for Treliving and head coach Craig Berube’s uncertain futures in Toronto.
The fact that Pelley is already getting a head start on the offseason through these meetings with Leafs staff and people around the league seems to suggest that things could move quickly once the season ends. Especially if their goal is to be back in the playoff conversation in 2026-27.
