During a summer where the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Gavin McKenna with the first overall pick, another former first overall selection could be heading to Scotiabank Arena this fall.
Toronto is expected to be among the teams in the mix for Patrick Kane, if he elects to test free agency, Nick Alberga of The Leafs Nation reports. Kane posted 16 goals and 57 points in 67 games last season with the Detroit Red Wings. The 2016 Hart Trophy winner is far removed from his prime, but he’s still an effective top-six forward with outstanding value on the power play. Kane is ranked as the No. 11 free agent on Daily Faceoff’s board, ahead of July 1.
Here’s what Daily Faceoff’s Matt Larkin wrote about Kane, entering free agency:
When healthy, Kane can still be a power-play asset at this stage of his career. He also ended his season with 25 points over his final 24 games following the Olympic break. But Detroit’s playoff drought has reached 10 years. He’s been productive enough alongside Alex DeBrincat to warrant returning, but would it be a smart move from Kane’s perspective? Surely he wants another shot at a deep spring run. With Dylan Larkin requesting a trade, it remains to be seen if the Wings take a step backward this offseason. Kane only has so many more seasons left in him
Toronto can easily afford Kane’s next contract, with $22.28 million in cap space via PuckPedia. There may be some ancillary reasons to pursue the 37-year-old winger. McKenna told reporters during his introductory media availability on Saturday that Kane is his idol, and he grew up watching his highlights on YouTube. The 18-year-old has been often been compared to Kane and Nikita Kucherov as a player. Kane would become the fourth player to be selected first overall on the Maple Leafs’ roster, joining McKenna, Auston Matthews and John Tavares.
It would be a compelling bet for the revamped Maple Leafs. There are no guarantees that Kane will make it to free agency, but the Maple Leafs could be among his suitors this week, with the motivation of returning to the playoffs.
