TORONTO — There is some anxious anticipation at the Doc Seaman Hockey Theatre at Ford Performance Centre, mixed in with tremendous, unabated excitement among the press corps. Gavin McKenna has arrived in Toronto, roughly 15 hours after the Maple Leafs selected him with the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. McKenna is the best winger to enter the NHL since his childhood idol, Patrick Kane, whom he received a congratulatory text from. At 10:03 AM, McKenna enters the room, alongside Mats Sundin (a surreal sight in and of itself) and general manager John Chayka.
It’s not quite Diego Maradona arriving to Naples in July 1984, but it sure as hell is close. McKenna is glowing, but he also commands the confidence and attention of the room, with a seniority that belies his age. The 18-year-old is a dynamic offensive talent who is expected to galvanize the world’s largest hockey market. And in short order, Sundin, who was the first overall pick in the 1989 NHL Draft, before becoming the most beloved player in Maple Leafs history, dispenses some succinct advice.
“Gavin is going to be an unbelievable asset for the Toronto Maple Leafs, for a long, long time,” Sundin states, which rings prophetic from a figure of his stature within the franchise.
“I think the most important advice I can give to Gavin is to stay true to himself. If there’s anything different in Toronto from other markets, it’s the size of the fan base, interest from the city, it’s the hockey capital of the world.”
McKenna’s air of genuine confidence will certainly lend itself well to Toronto. He’s been prepared for this moment for the better part of five years, as the consensus best player in the class since the cohort was publicly scouted. McKenna is ready for the territory and later Saturday, he’s expected to throw out the first pitch at the Toronto Blue Jays game, the first one he’s ever attended.
“It’s something I haven’t been too scared of,” McKenna said, when asked about the pressure of playing in Toronto.
“I think I’ve kind of learned how to deal with it from a younger age. This year especially with the draft and being the first kind of guy to go to college, there was a lot of eyes on me. So it’s something I’ve just kind of learned how to deal with. And I think when you’re playing hockey, you kind of just block it out. I think if you’re staying off social media and stuff like that, it’s a lot easier. But yeah, like I said, it’s nothing I’m not ready for.”
After the 11-minute public introduction and subsequent five-minute scrum, McKenna is escorted to another room, where he takes photos with fans, amid the introductory press tour. McKenna has happily obliged. In the hockey capital of the world, McKenna’s skill set and player profile has been discussed ad nauseam in the lead-up. Toronto is gaining a franchise-level player, who could restore the team back to playoff contention, as the club enters Year 11 of win-now mode, led by Auston Matthews and William Nylander. McKenna has the potential to supplant his current teammates as the greatest player in franchise history, but perhaps we’re getting carried away, after briefly staring off into the distance, where the young phenom hangs onto Sundin’s every word.
Welcome to Toronto, Gavin McKenna! It’s readily apparent that he’s going to own Canada’s largest city and hockey market in no time.
