As the Toronto Maple Leafs continue their search for their next president of hockey operations and/or general manager, The Athletic’s Chris Johnston and Jonas Siegel unveiled some new information about the process.
St. Louis Blues president of hockey operations/general manager Doug Armstrong was considered by many to be the dream candidate, after Toronto fired Brad Treliving on March 30. MLSE CEO Keith Pelley stated on March 31 that his next hire(s) would be data-driven, and would employ The Coaches Agency to assist in finding a large pool of candidates.
The Athletic reports that the Maple Leafs never reached out to Armstrong for an interview.
Mats Sundin is considered the front-runner for the president of hockey operations role, and it’s reported that the franchise legend is considered the title of vice president of hockey operations. Sundin met with Pelley and the MLSE board last week. Toronto is reportedly awaiting Sundin’s decision. If Sundin were to be named president of hockey operations, John Chayka would likely be installed as general manager.
Sundin’s close friend and teammate, Tie Domi, has been involved with the search process for a new executive, The Athletic reports. Domi has significant ties to the current Leafs group, with his son, Max, prominent involved within the top-nine forward corps. Sundin, Domi and Gary Roberts are all among the former Leafs players Pelley and the MLSE board have consulted with during the search.
Toronto is conducting a diligent search and has been careful not to earmark the position for a big-name executive. Armstrong never indicated that he wanted to leave the Blues, but the allure and prestige of the Maple Leafs’ job would certainly be fascinating for any high-end executive. Chayka and Dallas Stars assistant general manager Scott White remain as finalists for the position. In any event, it appears the Maple Leafs are ready to put forth a partnership involving the most beloved player in franchise history and an analytic-minded executive looking to make good on the second chance of a lifetime.
