The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Neil Glasberg and The Coaches Agency to conduct a search for their next head of hockey operations, Sportsnet’s Luke Fox reports.
MLSE CEO Keith Pelley told reporters last week that the organization would hire a search firm to lead their pursuit of a new head of hockey operations. Pelley stated that the Maple Leafs could operate with a new head of hockey operations overseeing a general manager, or the team will enter next season with a new general manager overseeing the entire department. Toronto fired Brad Treliving on March 30.
Florida Panthers assistant general manager Sunny Mehta could be a leading candidate for the vacancies. Mehta is a data-driven specialist for the Panthers, who ran the NHL’s first full-time analytics department with the New Jersey Devils. He has emerged as a popular candidate to become the Maple Leafs’ next general manager. Mehta is one of Glasberg’s clients, furthering the potential link to Toronto.
Here’s what The Leafs Nation wrote about Mehta, prior to the 2025-26 NHL season:
Mehta was a legendary poker player before joining the Panthers’ front office, and his superior of understanding of math and the salary cap positions the two-time champions to be contend for the next half-decade. He’s rarely discussed as a future general manager, but the NHL is a copycat league and the next great team executive is sitting in plain sight in the Panthers’ box.
Glasberg’s firms have been used to conduct general manager searches across the league. In many respects, the Maple Leafs are doing their all to show greater due diligence. Brendan Shanahan previously stated that his next general manager would require previous experience, before hiring Treliving in May 2023 after a short interview process.
It’ll be compelling to see who will emerge as candidates for formal interviews, with Mehta apparently in the lead at this stage of the search. Pelley said this would be his most important hire during his tenure at MLSE, as the market waits with fervent anticipation.
