The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Ryan Tverberg to a one-year extension carrying a cap hit of $850,000, via PuckPedia.
The 24-year-old was selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Leafs and has slowly worked his way up the depth charts. Tverberg enjoyed the most productive season of his pro career thus far, recording 36 points (15 goals and 21 assists) in 63 games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. He carried on that production in the playoffs, where he was among the Marlies’ leading scorers with 14 points (six goals and eight assists) in 24 games en route to them winning the 2026 Calder Cup.
His strong season earned him a two-game stint with the Leafs to end the 2025-26 regular season, where he went scoreless, registered two penalty minutes and was a +1.
“Growing up here, especially watching them my whole life, it’s going to mean a lot,” Tverberg said to reporters about his NHL debut on April 13. “A lot of hard work. Had to go through some injuries. A lot of hardships but, in the end, it will feel pretty good tonight.”
Tverberg was a lesser-known prospect when he was drafted, playing for the Toronto Jr. Canadiens of the OJHL in his draft year, but he earned an entry-level contract after a successful tenure with the University of Connecticut. After a solid rookie season with the Toronto Marlies, a difficult sophomore season ravaged by numerous injuries, and a much better third season, he finally got his aforementioned call-up to the NHL.
His play in the second half of last season as well as his playoff run with the Marlies has no doubt earned Tverberg this extension. Tverberg likely won’t be on the Leafs’ roster to start the 2026-27 season, but should be high up the list of call-up candidates to fill the void in the event of injuries to the main roster, and will compete for a spot in camp. It is worth noting that he is now eligible to be placed on waivers, so the Leafs will have to be mindful of this when it comes to bringing him up at some point next campaign.
This marks the second RFA signing the Leafs have completed after they inked defenceman Emil Andrae to a two-year, $1.55 million AAV deal on Saturday. With Tverberg signed, the Leafs are down to two RFAs who were given qualifying offers and need new contracts in Jacob Quillan and William Villeneuve.
