After a few days away from game action, the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday at Scotiabank Arena.
John Tavares skated for the second consecutive day after battling through an illness, while Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube told reporters that William Nylander will be a game-time decision, while also fighting through an illness. Berube also indicated that Nylander is doing better and it’ll be something to monitor ahead of the game.
Here’s what you need to know from morning skate:
Joseph Woll receives shots from players, Anthony Stolarz is the projected starter
Joseph Woll returned to morning skate and faced shots from players in routine shooting drills. Woll and Anthony Stolarz alternated reps every few minutes, before Woll headed to the other end of the ice to work with the forwards, while Stolarz took shots from the defencemen, working on a one-timer drill at the blue line.
Stolarz was the first goalie off the ice and is the projected starter.
Woll was previously placed on injured reserve on October 9 and is eligible to return Wednesday against the Kings, but all indications point to Stolarz getting the start. Dennis Hildeby was at the morning skate, but took fewer reps than Woll and Stolarz.
Timothy Liljegren expected to make season debut, encouraged to simplify his game
Timothy Liljegren is expected to make his season debut Wednesday after being a healthy scratch for the opening three games of the season. Liljegren was usurped by Conor Timmins, but he is expected to be paired alongside Simon Benoit. Berube provided his analysis of Liljegren’s game and he seems to have clearly established his criteria.
“He has ability,” Berube said of Liljegren. “Skating, moving the puck, things like that. He should be a good puck-mover. It’s about managing his game, managing his puck movement and making good decisions with it. Not risky ones. It’s simple, just simplify. And then you’ve got to win your battles. As a defenceman, it’s important that you’re defending well and you’re strong on your net-front and you’re winning those board battles, corner battles. He’s got to do that.”
William Nylander is a game-time decision
Nylander is fighting through an illness that has affected the team — notably Tavares, who missed Saturday’s home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins and is considered a game-time decision. He’ll be monitored throughout the day and it looks like Max Domi will be playing centre, regardless of Nylander’s inclusion in the lineup.
“We’ll see how the day goes for him. I think there’s improvement. Hopefully, he’s better later and able to play,” Berube told reporters.
Assuming Nylander will be ruled out, even if it’s precautionary, here is Toronto’s projected lineup:
Maple Leafs’ projected lineup:
Matthew Knies-Auston Matthews-Mitch Marner
Pontus Holmberg-John Tavares-Nick Robertson
Bobby McMann-Max Domi-Max Pacioretty
Steven Lorentz-David Kampf-Ryan Reaves
Morgan Rielly-Chris Tanev
Oliver Ekman-Larsson—Jake McCabe
Simon Benoit-Timothy Liljegren
Anthony Stolarz (projected starter)
Joseph Woll
Dennis Hildeby (projected scratch)
Kings’ projected lineup:
As for the Kings, David Rittich will start in goal. Joel Edmundson will not be making his return to Toronto, as he’s expected the birth of his first child.
David Rittich will start tonight in Toronto, with Copley backing up.
Darcy Kuemper is “day-to-day” per Jim Hiller.
